At the age of three, artist Malcolm Corley was diagnosed with autism. At about the same time, he began to draw the sketches from the TV show, Blues Clues. Recreations of Dr. Seuss’s illustrations came next, some of which he drew from memory. Today, the 23-year-old’s special art pieces has been showcased in numerous competitions.
“Everybody has something that makes them special,” Maria Corley said.
In the case of her son, Malcolm, it’s his artistic ability. But it’s also the fact that he’s autistic.
The Lancaster woman and her son recently exhibited his art work at the Nyeusi Gallery in Harrisburg. One of the paintings featured the quote: “Perfection isn’t a requirement for beauty.”
“Not that you’re not perfect if you have a disability,” Maria said, “but I know a lot of people who look upon that as an imperfection. So, to me that was a meaningful thing. He’s just a regular guy who has this real artistic gift that he takes in stride.”
