George Mason University seniors Judy Yang, Sital Luitel and Dennis Amoah on Aug. 13 presented five nonprofit organizations with 19 refurbished Dell and Lenovo computers.

The event, held at Van Metre Hall on Mason’s Arlington campus, was presented by Mason’s Institute for Digital Innovation and the Virginia Student Training and Refurbishment (Virginia STAR) Program. The students spent two to three hours on each computer, installing software and making sure that the computer was functional for its recipients.

The GMU STAR Program was introduced in March 2022 by Yang, who is majoring in information technology (IT) with a concentration in cybersecurity. She believed that bringing the STAR Program to the university would be a great opportunity, and liked how Mason stressed the ideas of giving back and supporting students and innovation at the forefront.

Yang has been a part of the program since middle school and continued it through high school. She was introduced to the tech route by her elementary GEMS (Girls Excelling in Math and Science) club adviser. Yang values the hands-on approach the STAR Program allows her to have with technology, all while being able to give back to her community.
