Firefighters plan fundraiser for cancer-stricken comrade

Bryan Carper has been a familiar sight at fires in Scott Township.

Paralyzed in an accident in his younger days, he could not actually fight the blazes. But he came in his wheelchair and did what he could to help to his fellow members of the volunteer fire department, passing out food and drinks to keep them going.

Now members of the department are turning the tables to give a helping hand to Bryan and his wife, Debbie, as Bryan nears the end of his fight against Stage 4 colon cancer which was diagnosed in March.

They have set a “Superbingo” fundraiser to help with his expenses Aug. 27 at the Scott Township Fire Hall. Doors will open at noon and the bingo will begin at 1:30. Admission is $20 and the event is open to the public.

Carper, 50, who was paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair while in the Air Force many years ago, nonetheless served the fire department, both at fire scenes and behind the scenes.
