Homeless veteran pedals to raise funds for vets pets group

Homeless veteran Harold Palmquist says he’s confident he’ll rejoin the workforce one day. For now, he is happy with his life, bicycling across the country with his canine pal, Daisy, and raising money for the veterans organization that helped the traveling duo.

Palmquist, 48, passed through Elizabeth City on Saturday and stopped at Mariners’ Wharf to rest and to walk and feed his dog.Passing motorists may have seen them. Palmquist was riding a red mountain bike and pulling a trailer that included a cage for Daisy. Affixed to the back of the trailer was a large yellow sign advertising the nonprofit, Veterans and Their Pets.

Based in Phoenix, Arizona, Veterans and Their Pets provides veterans’ pets with food and basic care, like shots and spay and neuter services, and if needed will place pets in a foster home until the veteran is able to resume care of the animal.
