Madison residents sleep on streets to help the homeless

Gerard A. Watson of Garfield Avenue is headed to a New Jersey Devils game this Friday, Feb. 3, in Newark — but ice hockey won’t be the only thing on his mind.

With a group of friends, he plans to talk up getting more people involved in helping the homeless — help that may include sleeping overnight on the streets of New York City in next November’s cold.

Watson did just that, for the third consecutive year, on the Thursday before last Thanksgiving with 18 Madison residents in a demonstration of concern — and fund-raising — organized through Covenant House of New York, a haven for homeless young people who otherwise would themselves be sleeping in subways or on the streets.
