Cub Scouts collect nearly 600 sleeping bags for homeless vets

These Valley kids are learning at an early age that social activism is a noble endeavor. And as a result, their efforts made these cold winter nights a little warmer for nearly 600 homeless veterans of our region.

Steven Rude, the Den 6 Leader and his Cub Scouts of Pack 333 in Calabasas, began waging a campaign late last year to collect sleeping bags for homeless vets. Their effort went viral. And it went global. And it was a success.

Rude said he got the idea for the sleeping bag drive on Veterans Day in early November when his Cub Scouts delivered clothing items to make patients at the West Los Angeles Veterans Administration Medical Center more comfortable.
