The talented Mackenzie Malpass is selling a cover of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” to benefit Ocean of Love.

That connection is strong. Malpass started helping Ocean of Love two years ago by recording a video rendition of Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings.” It featured a 4-year-old cancer patient named Reese. The two have stayed in touch.

“That was a huge inspiration for Mackenzie,” said Jennifer Malpass, Mackenzie’s mom. “It’s one thing to say you’re raising money for something, and it’s another to meet the people you’re impacting.”

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Of course that’s every month for Ocean of Love, which has helped more than 400 local families with things like travel expenses and counseling. Malpass, who attends Ocean County’s Performing Arts Academy in Lakehurst, performs regularly at the nonprofit’s events. It awarded her Youth Volunteer of the Year for 2015.

“Her singing is beautiful and brings everyone to tears,” said Danielle Baer, a social worker with Ocean of Love.

Baer worked with her to pick out “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Though the cost is $2, buyers can offer more as a donation.

“It’s a wonderful concept,” Baer said. “It’s an easy way to make money for us and it’s getting her voice out there.”

Mackenzie’s classmates have taken notice. Several of them volunteered to help her make a video version of “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”

The underlying point is to spread the joy of giving.
