Brittney Griner is helping to put the shoe on the other foot.
After collecting more than 500 pairs of shoes for her inaugural “BG’s Heart and Sole Shoe Drive” in late August, Griner spent Friday afternoon hand delivering the donated shoes to the homeless in downtown Phoenix.
“When I thought of this idea, I never would have dreamed we would have received so many pairs of shoes,” Griner said in a statement in August.
Griner hosted the drive in partnership with the Phoenix Mercury and the Phoenix Rescue Mission, a charitable organization that services residents struggling with homelessness, drug addiction and trauma.
She hopes to make the shoe drive an annual event.
“I would wake up every day, and put on a pair of shoes, never thinking about what it would be like to go without,” Griner said in a statement. “After seeing people walking the streets of Phoenix, without anything on their feet, I knew I had to do something to help.”
