Polish discus thrower Piotr Malachowski will sell the silver medal he won in Rio to help raise funds for a boy battling a rare form of cancer, he announced on his Facebook page.
“In Rio I fought for gold,” Malachowski said. “Today I call on all people – let us fight together for something that is even more valuable. For the health of this fantastic boy.”
All the proceeds from the sale will go to 3-year-old Olek Szymanski, who is suffering from retinoblastoma, a form of eye cancer.
According to Malachowski, the boy needs to travel to New York to receive a treatment that can possibly save his eyes.
Siepomaga, a Polish foundation supporting Szymanski, says that $126,000 is needed to finance the treatment at ophthalmic oncologist David Abramson’s clinic in New York.
